Snow Geese make their winter home in several areas of the Puget Sound. The
photographs on this page were all taken on Fir Island in Skagit County Washington.
Fir Island is created by the North and South forks of the Skagit river. The island has
a very small population and is largely farmland and woodland providing a large and
diverse wildlife population. On this day and in this particular field, there were an
estimated 15,000 Snow Geese that arrived here for feeding and resting. They spend
their nights on the saltwater of the Puget Sound. Then in the morning, large flocks
fly to various fields to feed and rest. It is an amazing site to see and be near these
flocks as they make their way to their daytime areas. Sometime in April, these
birds will wing their way North to Canada and the Arctic to nest and then return
again next fall. It is hard to capture the size of the flock. The panorama at the end
of the slide show took 9 frames to capture and record the size of the flock. Truly an
amazing event to watch. Click on the first image and enjoy the slideshow.
